The city council approved at their meeting yesterday to look into the option of selling the covered car parking houses to private parties. The suggestion was set forward by a representative of the left wing party and approved by votes by the left wing party and majority of the independence party and progressive party.
Thorleifur Gunnlaugsson councilman of the left wing party, says that it is normal that people are surprised when ideas about privatizing are lit in the camp of the left wing party. In the times of economic difficulties is important to show responsibility. "The covered car parking houses are in fact not a part of the sociological projects," says Thorleifur and it may be normal, when severe down cuts are expected for the city, to explore if funds can be saved or earnt this way. Representatives of the popular front party in the city council did not vote and booked preconditions to this case. In it says that the popular front party has preconditions to such privatizing plans, as it is clear that it might lead to severe raise of parking fees in the city. Then it is difficult to see how it is possible to part policies about pricing and access to central Reykjavik from the operations of covered car parking houses.
