Wednesday, 02 September 2009 08:52

Press release from from the coalition as it is sent to the media:

Iceland's Home Coalition (Hagsmunasamtök heimilanna, abreviated to HH here after) has announced a general strike in Iceland on all loan payments on October 1st to Oktober 15th. In Icelandic this new kind of strike is called "Greiðsluverkfall" which translates to Paystrike in English. On friday morning at 9:00 AM HH's strike commission met with Iceland's State Mediator, Magnus Pétursson to request that he mediate in upcoming negotiations between HH on one side and the Government, Icelandic Financial Services Association and Icelandic Pension Funds Association (IPFA) on the other. At the same time, the aforementioned negotiations opponents were handed the demands of HH along with invitations for negotiations.

Thousands of Icelanders are already on an unorganized Paystrike (up to 20% according to news). They either can't pay the mutated loan payments or have chosen not to because they regard the double and triple loan principals and interest based on illegal and/or unjustifiable business practices. The Paystrike is on one hand to support the people that have been forced to or have bravely already taken this step at considerable risk to their financial reputation. On the other hand it is to apply pressure on the Government and financial sector.
